More than 100 3D-printed homes are taking shape at Community First! Village in Austin, Texas, as part of an expansion designed to support people who have experienced chronic homelessness. Using large robotic printers, Austin-based ICON is creating the structural walls of each home and showing how an emerging construction technology can move beyond small-scale demonstrations to help build an entire community.
With ICON’s system reportedly able to print a home’s walls in less than 24 hours using a two-person crew, the possibilities are exciting. Although 3D printing is only one part of the overall construction process, it could help builders create quality housing more efficiently while easing labor demands and reducing material waste.
